the best ever!

08/17/08

michael phelps smashed into history with a record 8 gold medals tonight! this guy is so phenomenal. in a sport where any number of minor things can ruin your chances of victory he had a perfect week in beijing. talent, mental focus, luck and some damn great teammates (especially jason lezak!!!!) all fell together to provide the world memories of greatness. a completely exciting series of events that was a joy to witness.

have fun in hollywood

08/01/08

i still don’t understand fully why the red sox traded manny ramirez. as far as i’m concerned they just took themselves out of the pennant race. but as a yankee fan that doesn’t bother me in the least.

sayonara nomo

07/17/08

hideo nomo, the trailblazing japanese pitcher in major league baseball, has called it quits. i’d argue, along with sammy sosa, he was the most important figure from outside the united states to have had an impact on mlb as well as a key player who buoyed the game after fans were turned off by the 1995 strike. a true pioneer and someone true baseball fans know and admire. many thanks nomo.

bobby murcer: class act

07/13/08

bobby murcer passed away over the weekend from complications due to a brain tumor he’d been fighting. i remember my mom always had a crush on him when i was kid growing up watching the yankees. the game against baltimore sticks out in mind, following thurman munson’s funeral where bobby had all the rbi’s for the yankees in their victory that night. a classy, well liked guy and a great yankee on the field and in the broadcast booth. we’ll miss ya bobby.

olympic swimmer to compete with cancer

07/11/08

wow. this is an amazing story. eric shanteau made the olympic swim team knowing he was dealing with testicular cancer. had he not made the squad, he was to get treatment immediately, but cleared by his doctors he will start treatment after the olympics end. but he will be monitored the whole time and if any levels of things that they check for this type of thing get out of line, he’ll drop out and take care of business. i hope he can make it through and have success in beijing. we’ll be rooting for you eric.

tour de france rocked…yet again

07/11/08

it’s been getting increasingly difficult to watch the tour with all the busts on doping. today manuel beltran got kicked off for testing positive for epo. i don’t know what the answers are but it’s just difficult to get into an event knowing the biggest drama will be a doping scandal.

zito

07/01/08

barry zito cannot pitch anymore. he can’t. i feel as bad for a guy making 12+million a year as much as i can, vis a vis not wanting to see anyone do as horribly at their job as zito has since signing on with the san francisco giants. but i’m really sick of hearing him say his stuff is good, when it clearly wasn’t (you don’t fork over 5 runs with good stuff), that he just needs to get agressive on hitters (dude, you’re guaranteed a job, you can’t fuck it up any worse - pitch the goddamn ball), and that he’s always fired up for next time (cause it doesn’t seem that way).

zito’s a musician. a guitar player in fact. i wanna recommend frank zappa’s “shut up n’ play yer guitar“.

landis loses…again

06/30/08

disgraced pro biker floyd landis lost his supposedly final appeal against being stripped of his 2006 tour de france win. i really hope this is the last i ever have to hear about this.

the 2008 tdf starts in like 6 days, i think.
