modern geisha
12/04/07times are changing rapidly in japan. western influence continues to erode many japanese customs and the geisha is now coming to terms with that. dogged by a fading interest in traditional customs and an economy that still hasn’t quite recovered from the economic bubble burst, geishas are adjusting to new realities. there was a time when the geisha was rarely seen, except in exclusive restaurants and was even more rarely seen by a westerner, but now in order to survive, they are showing up to entertain the tourist crowds in kyoto and tokyo in order to survive. who knows, this could actually revive interest and propel the geisha into symbol in the 21st century.
