dinner not so impossible
09/30/07
food networks show “dinner impossible” has an element of appeal in the race against the clock formula, against all odds, making dinner for large crowds that chef richard irvine faces each week. the problem? he never doesn’t get the job done, which makes every dinner possible. the crowds, the expectations are set too high to actually fail so it’s really not fun to watch. if he failed to cook that dinner for 700 for the mayor’s reception or whatever that would be fun. watching him yell and yell about cooking for x-hundred amount of people to the schleps who get to help him just gets old. however, the schtick works as i watch week after week waiting for the failure.

when dick just made sense
09/28/07the less than honorable dick back in 1992, yet again explaining back then why taking baghdad
wasn’t a good idea. everything he said still held true 10 years later. why did dick change his mind? why didn’t dick listen to himself?

brutality in myanmar
09/28/07

among the dead in the “saffron revolution” in myanmar was japanese videographer kenji nagai, pictured in these disturbing photos from the incident. the military showed no restraint when firing into the crowd during a protest in rangoon city, killing at least nine people including nagai. a special united nations envoy is on the way to meet with buddhist opposition leaders to try and facilitate a diplomatic solution.
update: japanese television has aired video of the incident. see it here.

tecktonik
09/21/07it’s called tecktonik and the kids in france love it. the latest dance craze from paris that’s been around for a few years, has spilled out from the clubs to the streets and on to the wild wild web. this video, a demonstration by a kid named jey-jey, has over 2 million hits on youtube attesting to the popularity of the scene. mmmmm….i don’t know.

baseball science

interesting research on how muscle mass, and potentially steroids, can help players hit home runs. the benefit for a pitcher is highlighted as well.

landis found guilty
09/20/07
2006 tour de france winner floyd landis was found guilty of doping by an arbitration board and is officially set to lose his title. despite the blow he claims he proved his innocence. 2 of the 3 panel members disagree. he has one last appeal he can try but it seems worthless at this point. whether or not he doped is almost irrelevant now as his name is stained as long as he lives. i honestly don’t know what to think anymore or if i even care.

trade
09/19/07
trade is the new film from kevin kline (a fish called wanda, i love you to death) that deals with the epidemic of human trafficking. i’m anxious to see this as i did a small bit of research on this subject while working on a gang violence project and was pretty alarmed by how widespread a problem it is. here in san francisco we’re familiar with it as well in part due to a series in the sf chronicle on sex trafficking and the near slave like conditions for the women who fall victim to it. it’s a disturbing facet of life and one that runs to the tune of $30 billion a year industry.
